The term “committee” is misleading. We rarely have meetings, but get together to eat, drink and talk about films.
Trish Tyson – Treasurer
I joined the Film Club committee as treasurer in 2003 as a temporary measure, “just to help out” . I’m still here, finding the good company at our get-togethers to discuss films well worth a few trips to the bank to pay in the subs. I’m not a film buff, just I like to get lost in a good film. Favourite films – anything with Humphrey Bogart in, “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Midnight Cowboy”.
Rosie Kyles – Membership Secretary
I have been a member of Film Club at the Roxy since it began in 1989. I am currently Membership Secretary. My favourite thing about being on the committee is helping to choose the films and meeting lots of other people who enjoy talking about films. It is fantastic that we can get to see great foreign films on the big screen in the fabulous Roxy Cinema. The films I enjoy the most are slightly “kooky” ones such as “Some Like It Hot”, “The Big Lebowski” and “Bringing up Baby”. Hitchcock is one of my favourite directors and I especially like the film “North by North-West”.
Dave Kyles – Chair
I moved to Ulverston in Aug 1989, by coincidence just in time for the launch of Film Club at the Roxy. I have been a member every year since, & became chairman in 2011. I get bored by blockbuster movies, but really enjoy quality films from around the world, eg the work of Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Michael Haneke, Asghar Farhadi & Krzysztof Kieslowski. My favourite films include “Heaven’s Gate”, “The Third Man”, “In the Mood for Love” & “Cinema Paradiso”.
Glenn Lang – Committee Member
In my youth I spent many happy hours at the National Film Theatre, catching up on the history of film. While teaching overseas I went to the cinema as often as I could (which was easy in China, The Netherlands and Singapore, but difficult on an isolated fjord on Norway’s west coast!), occasionally watching films without subtitles in languages I couldn’t understand very well. On returning to England I joined the Film Club at the Roxy and its Committee. I particularly love films from different cultures.
Favourite films: “L’Atalante”, “Tokyo Story”, “Hibiscus Town”.
