In post-war Germany, liberation by the Allies does not mean freedom for everyone. Formerly a wartime inmate of concentration camps, Hans (Rogowski) is repeatedly imprisoned under Paragraph 175, which criminalizes homosexuality. Over the decades, with his number tattooed on his arm, he develops an unlikely bond with his straight cellmate Viktor (Georg Friedrich). Freedom for Hans finally comes in 1969.
“Great Freedom is a formidably intelligent and well-acted prison movie and also a love story.” – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
“Great Freedom is a portrait of a political journey, as well as that of a quietly fascinating hero.” – Anna Smith, Time Out
